I HATE YOU.

  1. Fisting in the Bible?

    Song of Solomon 5:2-4

The Songs of Solomon is one of the most graphic books of the Bible.  There is clear references to oral sex and other sexual acts.  While I was reading it today, I came across the few verses that struck me as odd.  Is the Bible describing the sexual act of fisting?

Some translations say that the woman’s lover put his hand by the door, or through the door’s hole. However, when you read the entire thing in context it is clear that this is metaphorical and what is being described is an act of love between two people, which is often used to relate the message of God’s love for Israel.  It isn’t about God’s love for Israel, it’s only used as a metaphorical parallel to relate that message to the so-called Church.

I take the line about the love knocking at the door as a reference to foreplay.  I see no other way to read it.

    New Century Version (NCV)

    The Woman Dreams

2 I sleep, but my heart is awake.
    I hear my lover knocking.
“Open to me, my sister, my darling,
    my dove, my perfect one.
My head is wet with dew,
and my hair with the dampness of the night.”
3 I have taken off my garment
and don’t want to put it on again.
    I have washed my feet
and don’t want to get them dirty again.
4 My lover put his hand through the opening,
    and I felt excited inside.

    Young’s Literal Translation (YLT)

2I am sleeping, but my heart waketh: The sound of my beloved knocking! `Open to me, my sister, my friend, My dove, my perfect one, For my head is filled [with] dew, My locks [with] drops of the night.’

3I have put off my coat, how do I put it on? I have washed my feet, how do I defile them?

4My beloved sent his hand from the net-work, And my bowels were moved for him.

    Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)

    W
2 I sleep, but my heart is awake.
A sound! My love is knocking! (A)

    M

Open to me, my sister, my darling,
    my dove, my perfect one.
For my head is drenched with dew,
my hair with droplets of the night.

    W
3 I have taken off my clothing. (B)
How can I put it back on?
    I have washed my feet.
How can I get them dirty?

4 My love thrust his hand through the opening,
and my feelings were stirred for him.
